The construction of the Titanic was started in March of 1909. After the idea was conceived in 1907 it took two years for Harland and Wolff to prepare their shipyard for construction. The one of a kind ship liner and sister ship, “Olympic” made up the White Star Line. They were built to serve elite ship travelers looking for a luxurious experience.
When the Titanic was built it was billed as the largest ship to ever hit the water. The state of the art construction coupled with its over the top luxury made it a spectacle of its time.
The Titanic was completed in 3 years and cost nearly $ 7.5 million to be completed. It took a team of almost 3000 men to build. The hull of the titanic was made up of sixteen compartments that were supposed to be watertight. It was advertised as an unsinkable ship with over the top luxury and amenities.
There were steel doors that could be shut in less than 25 seconds separating each compartment. The ship was suppose to be able to stay afloat even if the bottom 2 or 3 compartments were flooded. It was discovered later, almost 6 compartments were flooded when the ship went down.
The watertight compartments were the ships safety system that would prevent it from sinking. There were three different ways the automatic doors could be shut. The doors were watertight to prevent multiple compartments from sinking. The captain had his own switch on the deck that would automatically close all the doors. If he felt necessary he had control of the doors.
There were levers next to each door that could automatically close them if a worker saw the need to block off a flooded compartment. Lastly there was an automatic system that was capable of automatically closing the doors. This would supposed to protect the ship from any chance of sinking. As we all know the system was a big fail.
The iron that built the ship has been recently investigated. It apparently was not the greatest quality iron, at least not as good as we have now. The sulfur contents were too high and might have played a role in the ships durability.
The builders of the ship can’t be held responsible for the sinking though. The iron they used was in fact in line with the standards of the time. Apparently the rivets holding the iron together crumbled when the massive ship struck an iceberg.
When the ship was built, it was the largest in the world. Ships were growing at a rapid rate but no one had any experience building such a large vessel. From design flaws to having too few life boats, the inexperience played a role in the overall demise of the ship.
The Titanic’s frame was completed by April, 2010, and the steel shell plating was done in October of 1910. The interior was completed and the Titanic was ready for launch at the end of May in 1911. In all, the construction of Titanic took a little more than two years to complete.
The initial launch of the Titanic went smoothly. It took 62 seconds for the ship to get into the water. The launch was followed by an exclusive lunch for guests. The Olympic was also revealed at the same time.
The White Line star wanted a quick launch of The Olympic. Problems with the Olympic ultimately caused a delay in the completion of the Titanic’s fittings. Eventually the 200 ton floating crane was able to finish the Titanic’s fittings, and it was ready for the open sea.
The Titanic propelling system was made up of boilers, funnels and massive propellers. There were twenty-four double ended and five single ended boilers that produced energy for the Titanic. The 31 boilers were housed in six different rooms. Each double barrel boiler was twenty feet long and nearly sixteen feet around. Each double barrel boiler contained six coal burning furnaces.
The single ended boilers were nearly twelve feet long and sixteen feet around. Exhaust from the boilers was directed out through three massive funnels.
There were four funnels with the purpose of ventilating the boilers and preventing the build up of smoke and gasses. Originally the had three funnels. A fourth was added to make the ship appear more powerful.
The collection of boilers powered three massive propellers on the back of the ship.
When the Titanic, was completed it was like nothing else the world had ever seen.
